The Galloway House Great Danes
Moose
Rescued Ap.12th 2002 from Mighty Mutts, New York City, approx. - 2 1/2 yrs old.
I didn't realize it at the time but adopting Moose was my "equal and opposite reaction" to the deep saddness and brutal anger that I, and millions of other New Yorkers felt after attack on September 11th, 2001. I was living just a few subways stops north, had been in both buildings countless times and knew my share of moms, dads, brothers and daughters who just went to work on a sunny day. Moose was thin and sickly when I first saw him but we were instantly a team. He had the uncanny ability to know that if in the middle of the night Charlie was hogging their bed, then I would want him to wake me with his very wet and extraordinarily cold nose so I could then cajole Charlie to get up and move over to give Moose the space he deserved. I always had the feeling that he thought he was taking care of me and he did a great job.
Died in my arms Dec. 3rd, 2009 of old age.
Charlie
Rescued May 29th, 2003 from a shelter in East Northport, NY , - approx. 1 1/2 yrs. old
I was volunteering for the Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League and got a call about a Dane scheduled to be put down the following day, so Moose & I jumped in the car adopted Charlie on first sight. He'd been found 10 days earlier eating out of garbage cans but no one had claimed him. For some unknown reason he doesn't like people leaning over and staring at himbut if you look away he'll let you scratch his back all day long. He's always been the care giver in the family, keeping an eye on everyone and he firmly believes that every bed is for communal sleeping.
Scooter
Rescued from two jack-___es in Savannah, GA - approx. 3 yrs. old
Posted on Craig's List by a couple that had big gas guzzling, chrome covered toys in their front yard but Scooter lived in the backyard under a sheet of plywood leaned against their garage. He was painfully thin and was starving for food and affection. After a couple of months, the parasites were gone and he started to feel healthy probably for the first time in his life. Before long if I left the room while he was eating, he would leave his food behind and follow me wherever I went. He was big, goofy, never doubted that every guest had come to Savannah just to see him and he couldn't have been more loving. In Jan. '09 at age 5 he was diagnosed with acute congestive heart failure and despite the best medical care he suffered a massive heart attack in April 17th, 2009.
Puppet
Rescued from two more jack-___es in Savannah, GA - approx. 5 months old
Two adults, each with full time jobs, a 7 month old child with heart problems, a Great Dane and a German Shepard yet they thought getting a Great Dane puppy was a good idea... for about 6 weeks. Puppet has learned how to train humans; lean against them and they will laugh and pet you, then slide down and roll over onto their feet so they can't walk away, they'll laugh even harder and scratch your tummy. Everyone's lap is a prefectly suitable place to sit, but if you poke your head between their lags and lift up, they'll give you all their attention! He's very good at training humans.

Puppet
Rescued in Savannah, GA - approx. 5 months old Two adults, each with full time jobs, a 7 month old child with health problems, and two large dogs in a tiny house, yet they thought getting a Great Dane puppy was a good idea... for about 6 weeks. By day he'd been tied to a tree and at night he'd slept on a garage floor. Since arriving at the Galloway House, Puppet has learned how to train humans; lean against them and they will laugh and pet you, then slide down and roll over onto their feet so they can't walk away, they'll laugh even harder and scratch your tummy. Everyone's lap is a prefectly suitable place to sit and if you poke your head between their legs and lift up humans become very excieted! He's never met a pillow he didn't like.
